I know, the title is super cheesy, but, seriously, I can’t get over how small the world is. It’s this strange combination of public health, Southern Africa and international NGOs where everybody knows everybody. The first example of this happened during my first week in the office. I was attending a meeting with one of our partners and to my HUGE surprised ran into my APCD from PC Botswana who is working for that organization here in Lesotho! I was totally blown away by that, especially because I thought she was in Mozambique! Then, a colleague at another partner organization was a PCV in South Africa and knows two other PCVs from Botswana (one in my group and the other in the group before me) that I know very well. I’ve met two people who, combined, know several people from my MPH class at Hopkins, somebody who worked for CDC in Botswana and today ran into somebody that I interviewed with for a job back in the U.S. I think I had an idea that the world of international public health was very small, but it just hits me again and again how really true it is.
